西垣 正信

Born in Kyoto. Studied with Henri Dorini at Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Nice CRR. In 1971, he graduated from the Conservatory with the special award of unanimous judges. The following year, In 1972, he was also awarded the Grand Prix de la Ville de Nice for his interpretation of Concerto de Aranjuez with Nice Philharmonic Orchestra. 

Since then, he has been invited to participate in recitals and master classes in France, Monaco, Switzerland, others European countries, England, Asia and Eastern Europe.

In Japan, he played the first performance many of contemporary music composed by Toru Takemitsu, Hinoharu Matsumoto, and Norio Fukushi. In chamber music, Mr. Maxence Larrieu, Mr. Michael Coughler, Mr. Grussen Tatu, and Mr. Robert Eitken of the flute. Performed a lot with famous musicians.

In 2000, he was invited to the concert “The four Lute Suites” for the 250th anniversary of Bach's death in England and France. In addition, the world's first publication of "Goldberg Variations" by Bach arranged on a guitar doublet became a hot topic, and the name is known as Bach playing. In 2002, commissioned by York College in England, composed a "monodrama based on new and modern poems" and premiered at the National Center for Early Music in England. In 2015, he performed Arpeggione Sonata by F.Schubert and in 2016, Boléro by M.Ravel with the world's first guitar solo.

Even now, he is mainly based in Japan and Europe, and is performing recitals Bach, Scarlatti, Schubert, Beethoven, Chopin, Falla, Debussy and Ravel. He is one of the few classical guitarists who can play these novel, amazing and difficult programs.

Since 1988 he has been a member of the jury of the Maria Canals International Music Competition sponsored by the Spanish government.
